BES Assistant Director
BES High School Director

After breaking records at the NCAA and high school levels as a player, BES High School Director and Club Head Coach Michael Skarbelis has produced nationally-recognized talent as an NCAA coach. A four-year starter at striker and center back for New England College, the Maryland native was named a captain ahead of his sophomore season, and remained a captain through senior year. He remains the college’s record-holder for most points and most assists, all-time. His performance under playoff pressure was consistently recognized as well, as he made the All-Tournament Team for three straight seasons, earning Tournament MVP honors in 2016. He was a three-time All-Region selection, twice leading the conference in goals. New England College named him Athlete of the Year for 2017 after he’d earned the soccer team’s Leader/MVP award in both 2016 and 2017.

Michael’s North Andover High School career has been recognized in Merrimack Valley soccer history by the media and in the school’s record books. The Eagle Tribune selected him for its All-Decade team for the 2010-2020 era, and he remains North Andover’s all-time leader in points, goals and assists. Michael also broke Charlie Davis’ single-season record of 39 goals, scoring 41 goals in one campaign. Of note, his school record 71 career goals overall were scored in only three seasons. The Boston Globe recognized Michael as its D2 Soccer Athlete of the Year in 2014, honoring his two-time All-State, two-time All-Conference and Merrimack Valley Conference MVP tenure.

Michael currently serves as Head Goalkeeper Coach and as an Assistant Coach at Salem State College. Since joining the staff in 2019, he’s coached three All-Region players and three Goalie of the Year recipients for the program (2019, 2021, 2022). One of his goalkeepers, Matt Hauntsman, earned a top five save percentage among all NCAA Division III players (2022). In addition to his private lesson work, Michael runs College ID clinics for both BES and Salem State. He is a U.S. Soccer D-licensed coach whose recent club coaching resume includes Aztec (2020-2021) and Hampshire United (2018-2019). His passion for the game is long-standing. Growing up, he led North Shore United to a top five ranking nationally amid four consecutive state titles.
